San Sebastian is a fantastic place, but as much as we loved it, before too long it was time to go. We could only hope that this place was a sign of things to come. Saying goodbye to our New Zealand neighbors, we fire up VanDamme, time for another road trip.

While driving through France we discovered the hard way that major freeways sometimes incur a road toll (42 euros for one section!) with this on our budget conscious minds, the four of us (heavy one travel buddy Sarah) decide to take the scenic route around the coast making our way eventually over the Portuguese boarder and into Porto.

The first day of traveling included a few unscheduled stops to take a dip at some beautiful beaches along the way but eventually saw us in a small little coastal town called Comillas. It was getting late and this place had a good feeling about it. The van The van would be safe and parking was free.

The next night we set our sights a little further. We wanted to make it to the north west corner of Spain a city called La Coruna. After a few minor navigational errors we make good time and arrive with plenty of daylight to spare (pretty crucial when choosing a ‘safe’ area to sleep) as we drove around we saw on the other side of the bay a small strip of sand that looked to have parking on it, that is where we would sleep that night, we couldn’t have picked a better spot. A free, safe area, two meters from a shore of a very clean beach, public toilets beside us and a few cheap pubs just a two minute walk away .

The next morning came too soon and it was going to be a big drive, we planned to cross the Portuguese border and make it as far as Porto. This was a town I knew nothing about, but Mick had been informed by our New Zealand neighbors (Kate, Mandy, Nicola, and Amy) that this was the next place to go. “Free alcohol and plenty of it” is all I heard and we were already on our way!

Porto, Portugal is a port town home of port wine produced from port grapes (I’m not taking the piss, its true. I just wanted to see how many times I could write ‘port’ and get away with it). Port wine is actually made and put into barrels outside of Porto, but then sent there to age by the docks, there are many wineries here, many offer a tour of the cellars free of for around three Euros charge and all offer a free tasting of a few of their wines. This isn’t supposed to be too informative, the point I’m trying to make is that they give you Free Alcohol! (and damn fine stuff too)

I did know at one stage how many port houses there were in Porto but by the time we made it half way through the list I was already forgetting how many we had been to! After two days of hardcore drinking we had been to every free tasting there was on offer, so as any silly Aussie guys on a budget would do we tried again, in disguise. We were a little short on wardrobe so we called n the services of our travel buddy Sarah. A few outfits later the four of us were cross dressing! A bit of lippy here, an orange or two for fake breasts in the appropriate places and we were off in search of yet more free port!

Very strange looks were cast upon us as we entered the small port house. Mick in Sarah’s bikini, Jag in a lovely skirt/blouse combo, myself in a tight fitting slinky spaghetti strap blue dress and Sarah in a man’s shirt, jeans and eye liner pencil moustache. Next came the falsetto voices and the realisation from the staff. Before we knew it, the whole place was in hysterics and our glasses full of free port. Mission accomplished and back to the campsite with a cheap-arse but tasty bottle of port that we bought out of guilt. We had managed to spend bugger all, get very nicely toasted and have a very crazy day and that was only the day… I’ll let JAG fill you in on the rest of the night…

NOTE FROM JAG: IT SEEMS THAT THE REST OF THIS JOURNAL HAS BEEN LOST (MOST LIKELY BECAUSE WE WERE DRUNK ON PORT) OR WAS NEVER WRITTEN (MOST LIKELY BECAUSE WE WERE HUNG OVER ON PORT). EITHER WAY, DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR MY ADDITION TO THE STORY BECAUSE IT AIN’T HAPPENING. IF YOU’RE SO KEEN TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED, BUY THE DVDS AND WATCH THE SHOW!!
